A new app that brings Bluffton history to life

Bluffton Buddy, a mobile app for smart phones and tablets that portrays the people, places and traditions which make Bluffton SC the Heart of the Lowcountry, is available for FREE download in the App Store for Apple iOS devices and Google Play for Android.

Published by Celebrate Bluffton, Inc., Bluffton Buddy takes users on a virtual tour of Bluffton SC’s past with stops at historic churches; insights to the religious and community traditions of the Gullah people; a look at the Bluffton Movement which started the call for secession almost 20 years before the Civil War began; a view of the oyster packing industry which once thrived in Bluffton with six oyster factories in town; and other fascinating insights to Bluffton and Lowcountry history.

“Bluffton Buddy illuminates little understood areas of Lowcountry heritage,” says Bob Newbert, Chairman of Celebrate Bluffton. “You learn about the Bluffton thoroughbred owner whose racehorse won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the scandalous wedding of a Bluffton millionaire which captivated America, the Gullah Watch Night tradition, and the meaning of leaving three peas of Hoppin’ John on your plate. It’s the perfect way to learn about Bluffton’s history as one of the last examples of an antebellum Lowcountry summer planter’s colony.”

Bluffton Buddy has 13 stops throughout Bluffton that are GPS-enabled to guide users to each location. Newbert said you go at your own speed and can do the tour in one session (about four hours) or over several days. “You can take the entire tour or just the parts that interest you most,” he noted.
