Emergency crews are headed to Highway 21 and Gulfstream Road after reports of a plane going down in the area.
The Savannah Professional Firefighters Association says it is an Air National Guard C-130 airplane crashed (military plane)
"It was horrible," said Denver Goodwin, who works at a wrecker service down the street from the crash. "The ground shook like a bomb was going off. All the people in the building started panicking. It was absolutely horrible."
According to a news release from the 165th Airlift Wing in Savannah, the C-130 Hercules cargo plane from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard crashed at about 11:30 a.m. while performing a training mission. There were five on board and two are confirmed dead, at this time.
Highway 21 is completely shut down near Gulfstream Road. Traffic is severely affected on nearby roads as well. Please avoid the area if possible.
The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System sent a notification to parents advising that power, phone and network services have been shut down at both Port Wentworth Elementary and Rice Creek School due to the crash. Officials advise that there are no impacts or threats to the schools. School operations currently remain on our regular operating regular schedule.
