Safety Issues Delay Reopening of Mills B. Lane Blvd. Bridge

The City of Savannah is delaying the reopening of the bridge on Mills B. Lane Boulevard due to safety issues. The City began maintenance of the bridge on June 4 and since then, contractors have uncovered a few cracks and additional wear and tear that could comprise the structural integrity of the bridge.

The bridge was originally scheduled to reopen on August 11. Now the bridge will be closed until mid-September.

“We are asking people to please be patient a little while longer,” said Traffic Engineering project manager Barry Stanton. “We know it is an inconvenience, but we want to make sure the bridge is safe. We ask motorists, bicyclist and pedestrians to stay off the bridge during construction, it is for their own safety.”

Stanton said some people have complained about the bridge being closed because they cannot see anyone working on the bridge. “The repair work is taking place under the bridge, so it is not visible from the road, but crews are hard at work.”

Mills B. Lane Boulevard is closed to thru traffic at the railroad overpass bridge between Erickson Drive and Ross Road. The traffic detour plan will utilize Ogeechee Road, Victory Drive, and Montgomery Street for east/west traffic. Local traffic will be allowed to approach up to approximately 50 feet from each bridge.
