The Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) is continuing to monitor Hurricane Florence and any potential impacts it may bring to Chatham County.
The 5 pm update from the National Weather Service indicates that Georgia could see tropical storm force winds and rainfall as early as 8pm Thursday night. Residents in areas that typically flood should stay alert for possible flood risks.
There are currently no evacuation orders for Chatham County. However, CEMA Director, Dennis Jones, encourages residents who feel unsafe to evacuate as they see fit.
Savannah Chatham County Public School System has cancelled all after-school activities beginning Thursday. Public schools will be closed on Friday, September 14th.
CEMA is encouraging residents to finalize their preparedness efforts. Some activities may include:
- Secure all outdoor items that may blow around in the wind.
- Fill prescription medications, stock up on oxygen and other medical supplies needed for at least 3-5 days.
- Finalize disaster supply kits and re-stock important items.
- Prepare for potential prolonged power outages- stock up on gasoline for generators and gather non-perishable food items, including water.
- Charge cell phones and any additional back-up batteries. Also, make sure family communication plans are up to date.
