Should Puerto Rico become our 51st state?

The governor of Puerto Rico has formally asked President Trump to consider statehood for the island. The idea has been bandied about for decades, but it has been revived one year after Hurricane Maria wrought massive destruction on Puerto Rico. That’s no coincidence. Many, including the governor, feel that the federal government’s response to the storm was woefully inadequate compared to its response to disasters in U.S. states. Residents of Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens but cannot vote in presidential elections and have no voting representation in Congress. Most do not have to pay federal income tax but do pay Social Security and Medicare taxes.
