Hold on to your hat: a new study says dogs aren't that smart

Dogs may be our best friends and loving companions and seem like the smartest things on four legs to us, but a new study came to the sad conclusion that dogs really aren't that smart. The study compared the smarts of dogs to other carnivores, social hunters and domestic animals -- which dogs are all of -- such as wolves, cats, dolphins, chimpanzees, pigs and pigeons. What they found is that dogs just aren't exceptional when it comes to cognition. However, there were a few areas where dogs were at least average or slightly above, including social cognition, particularly when they are taking cues from humans.
