Two years ago, the director of nursing at Franciscan Children's Hospital in Boston set eyes on Giselle, a blue-eyed baby with brown wispy hair. Since that moment, Liz Smith knew she was going to adopt the girl, who at the time was a ward of the state. After putting in a request to foster Gisele, Smith went to the baby's hospital room every day after work to sit next to her crib and talk in a soft voice. In April 2017, when Gisele was nine months old, she received permission to take Gisele home with the stipulation that every effort would be made by the state to reunite the infant with her birth parents. Gisele’s birth parents were deemed unfit to care for her and Smith was given full parental custody.
