A high school valedictorian in San Diego used her graduation speech to slam school staff, charging in the address that has gone viral that office staff nearly made her lose out on scholarship money, that her counselor didn't have time for her, and that a teacher was often drunk in class. Nataly Buhr of San Ysidro High School at first thanked her parents, friends and a few teachers in the speech for inspiring her to achievement, but then went on to sarcastically thank other school employees who she said taught her valuable lessons by not doing their jobs. Although she didn't mention names, she said of the school office staff: "Your negligence to inform me of several scholarships until the day before they were due potentially caused me to miss out on thousands of dollars." She then said: "To my counselor, thanks for teaching me to fend for myself. You were always unavailable to my parents and I, despite appointments." Buhr went on to speak about a teacher who was, quote, "regularly intoxicated during class," stating, "Thank you for using yourself as an example to teach students about the dangers of alcoholism." A school district spokesman told theSan Diego Union-Tribunethat what Buhr said wasn't in the pre-approved speech she'd submitted before graduation, and called her comments "inappropriate and out of line."
