How often should police be checking in on their prisoners? Alan Ruel says the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested him for being drunk in a public place even though he hadn’t had a drink. He says he was placed in a cell for more than 18 hours and that he was actually suffering with a massive stroke. He’s filed a civil case against the police force, and is seeking $6 million. Ruel says during the hours he spent alone in the cell he was deteriorating medically, and half of his body was paralyzed. He also says he told officers he wasn’t drunk and asked for a breathalyzer test but was denied.
