SHOULD YOU BE WIPING DOWN YOUR GROCERIES?

Each day the United States is continuing to see an increase in coronavirus cases across the country — with more and more cities and states announcing stay-at-home orders for their communities. An exception to this new normal are trips for essentials, such as groceries. And so a debate rages: Should you be wiping down your groceries when you arrive home?

Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at Colombia University, does it this way:

• Minimize grocery store trips to once a week or less.

• Go during off hours to avoid as much interaction with people as she can.

• Bring your own disinfectant wipes and wipe down your cart.

• Use self check-out if available and avoid touching your face.

• After you load the groceries into the trunk of the car, but before you touch your steering wheel and other parts of the interior, wipe your hands with a disinfectant wipe.

• Once home, unload and put your groceries away — then wash your hands. If you’re really concerned you can wear gloves as you put your groceries away.

… However, other experts recommend wiping down the groceries with disinfectant wipes.
