Koala crosses freeway and leads to a six-car pile-up in Australia

Never underestimate the destruction one cute koala can cause. On Monday (February 8th) a koala walked onto a busy freeway in Australia, and caused a six-car pileup before climbing into a car and getting behind the wheel. The now viral photo was taken by Nadia Tugwell, who was caught in traffic behind the pileup on Adelaide’s six-lane South Eastern Freeway. She said she was unsure of what caused the accident until she saw a woman chasing a “cute” koala, who was “stomping between the cars.” Tugwell had previous experience rescuing koalas and grabbed a jacket. She ended up catching the koala, wrapping it up, and putting it in the back of her SUV. She then drove to a nearby gas station while waiting for a representative of the Adelaide Koala Rescue. But she says she had to then “jump out of the car at the stage when he decided to take over.” The koala had climbed out of the truck and into the SUV’s cabin, before jumping into the driver’s seat where it gripped the wheel with both hands. The animal had moved into the backseat by the time the rescuers arrived, and was swept into a bag. The uninjured animal was released about a half-mile from the freeway. Also, there were only minor injuries sustained by humans in the crash.
