Policeman braves flames and smoke to save chained dog from home fire

An Arvin police officer saved a dog chained outside a mobile home fire fully engulfed in flames Monday.

Arvin Police Officer Adam Calderon responded to a fire where a mobile home was fully engulfed. The owners told him that their dog was chained up in their backyard. Officer Calderon immediately ran through the neighbor’s yard, around all the thick smoke to get to the dog without considering his own safety.

Body camera video shows the flames were right behind him, the smoke was thick, and the heat was intense.(see below)

“He never thought about giving up and clearly saved that dog’s life. Once got the dog to safety, he comforted him and said, ‘I told you that you could trust me.’ He then returned the dog to his family.

Arvin police said he climbed over a six-foot fence and approached the dog who was visibly shaken up.

He tried several times to unchain him. As the thick smoke and flames got closer to his back, he shielded the dog with a large cement block while he stepped into the next yard to look for a tool to release the dog and get a break from the smoke and heat from the flames. He eventually used hedge trimmers to break the chain and take the dog to safety.
