Chatham County offers resources, relief to residents following Ogeechee River flooding!
In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby and the flooding of the Ogeechee River, Chatham County and its community partners are coordinating a variety of essential services to aid residents in need.
At Compassion Christian Church, a Resource Center is open Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9am and 4-8pm. They have food, water, flood buckets with cleaning supplies, activity buckets for children, hygiene items and tarps. Supplies change as things go in and out, but these are pretty consistent. To receive supplies bring a driver's license or valid ID that verifies their address was impacted by flooding.
In addition to receiving supplies meet with a variety of organizations offering support to flood victims: Salvation Army, Samaritan's Purse, Red Cross, and CEMA. Next week Public Health will be offering Tetanus shots.
Chatham County residents facing the challenge of cleanup after Tropical Storm Debby can register for Crisis Cleanup assistance by calling 1-844-965-1386. This system aims to connect the community’s needs with organizations ready to provide support. Registering with Crisis Cleanup does not guarantee assistance but does allow organizations within the area to receive notification of the community's needs.

Chatham County Animal Services was on the ground alongside swift water rescue teams, ready to assist whenever an animal was brought out of the floodwaters. Animal Services provided dog food, leashes, muzzles, and blankets, and set up kennels for pets in need. For evacuees who were not comfortable bringing their animals to shelter-in-place locations, Chatham County Animal Services offered to take their pets into their facility, ensuring they were safe, well-fed, and cared for. To date, Chatham County Animal Services has conducted about 20 rescues, taking in 13 animals at their shelter, while three have been placed in the shelter-in-place set up by the Red Cross.
The Cynthia Street Shelter at the Coastal Georgia Comprehensive Academy in Savannah provides a refuge for those affected by Tropical Storm Debby and related flooding. The shelter, which welcomes both people and pets, including cats and dogs, is open to anyone in need. The American Red Cross is available to answer questions at 1-800-733-2767.
