Imagine on a quiet Sunday evening you hear a loud thud outside your home and when you look you see the wrecking of a plane just laying there. That's what happened last night.
The pilot of a small airplane that crashed last night near Habersham Street and East 66th Street has passed away. A passenger has been taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Multiple homeowners in the area have said it’s a small Cesna airplane.
According to Flight aware, the airplane is registered to Marti Jorge out of Miami. Reportedly it was a flight from Miami to Savannah. The aircraft is a 1964 CESSNA 336, Fixed-wing multi-engine with 4 seats.
According to the IAFF Savannah Firefighters’ social media, “Savannah Union Firefighters have responded to the area of Habersham Street and East 66th Street for a downed aircraft. At approximately 9:46pm, Savannah Fire was notified of a crashed aircraft with unknown injuries or entrapments. A full Technical Rescue (TRT) response was dispatched on the assignment. The first arriving unit confirmed the crash and updated responding units of two patients entrapped. Savannah Union Firefighters from IAFF Local 574 worked with great haste to extricate the patients in order for them to be transported to a hospital. This is an active scene. The area will be closed to allow for investigation and removal of the aircraft.”
