Former American Idol star Jordin Sparks is a massive football fan – and the daughter of former NFL star Phillippi Sparks – but she hasn’t spoken out publicly about President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of football players who take a knee during the national anthem. But she did make a silent yet powerful statement when she sang the anthem Monday night at the Cardinals/Cowboys game in her home city of Glendale, Arizona.
As she performed, Jordin’s hand on the microphone was clearly visible, and fans could see that she had written “Prov. 31: 8-9” on her hand. That’s a reference to the Bible’s Book of Proverbs, which reads: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
Before Monday’s game, the Dallas Cowboys dropped to one knee before standing and locking arms to sing the national anthem. The Arizona Cardinals did the same.
Her silent action garnered plenty of praise across Twitter, and she began trending shortly after.
