Napping vetersan doesn't smell housefire, but his service dog does

While many of us have dogs at home who provide both comfort and companionship, we may underestimate the value of service dogs. They are trained to help those in need, often according to very specific needs. Tony Damato is an Ohio Vietnam War veteran, and his service dog, Bella, is constantly by his side. He has a number of health issues and Bella has been there for him in times of need. With his wife and daughter away, Tony fell asleep. He napped for about an hour, unable to smell smoke filling his house — and only woke up when Bella jumped on him. Tony then saw the smoke and was able to get out of the house in time. But Bella was still stuck inside. Firefighters had to fetch her from inside the house. She had inhaled a lot of smoke. Both the service dog and her owner were taken to hospitals for treatment.
