A woman climbed the Statue of Liberty yesterday (July 4th) to protest against immigration policy, while others unfurled a banner from the pedestal calling for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), forcing the evacuation of the statue on the Fourth of July. The woman, who held police off for hours after climbing the base and sitting by the statue's robes, was arrested, as were at least six other demonstrators. Therese Okoumou told police she was protesting the separation of immigrant children from parents who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally. Jay W. Walker, an organizer of the group Rise and Resist, which was behind the banner demonstration, said Okoumou wasn't part of the planned protest, and they had no idea she would do it.
