The City of Savannah unfurled a new American flag at Veterans Memorial Park

The City of Savannah unfurled a new American flag at Veterans Memorial Park.

The park is located off of Abercorn St. at the end of Truman Parkway.

City of Savannah Alderman Tony Thomas has been working on this project using SPLOST funds.

“This is a symbol of freedom and it’s a symbol that our community appreciates those that serve in our community,” said Thomas.

The 30ft by 50ft flag is the biggest flag in Savannah.

The moment brought people, especially those who have served in the armed forces, to tears.

“It brings back memories to when I was in Vietnam,” said Richard Halperin, a Vietnam war veteran.

Alderman Thomas said plans for the park include enhanced landscaping, an honor garden, a parking area, and benches.
