NON-PROFIT HAS MADE MORE THAN ONE MILLION CALLS TO LONELY SENIORS

For more than two decades, a California nonprofit called Eskaton has been making phone calls to lonely seniors, and has logged more than 1.6 million calls. The phone calls are made as part of Eskaton's Telephone Reassurance program, with volunteers reaching out to homebound seniors to check on their health and also to give them a chance to socialize via some conversation. The program manager says that older people who are lonely are more likely to develop dementia, and that loneliness also causes negative physical effects.
