Hurricane Florence is expected to make landfall this morning (September 14th) near the border between North and South Carolina, but the storm began lashing the North Carolina coast yesterday with strong winds, rain and storm surge flooding in coastal streets. Tens of thousands of people were already without power. Florence, once a powerful Category 4 storm, was downgraded to Category 1 last night, but forecasters warned the slow-moving storm is still very dangerous because of storm surge and the amount of flooding from days of downpours that's expected over portions of the Carolinas, described by forecasters as "catastrophic."
