The California woman suspected of stuffing seven newborn puppies in a sealed plastic bag and casually tossing them in a dumpster has been charged with seven felony counts of animal cruelty. The charges were filed (by the Riverside County District Attorney) on Tuesday after animal services said it recovered a total of 38 other dogs at the woman’s property when she was arrested Monday.
… Deborah Sue Culwell, 54, was charged with seven felony counts of injuring the puppies and seven misdemeanor counts of abandoning them. She faces up to seven years behind bars if convicted as charged.
… Culwell is suspected of ditching the three-day-old dogs in the trash near a Napa Auto Parts store in Coachella last Thursday. The newborn puppies, believed to be terrier mixes, were quickly discovered by a good Samaritan who took them to the entrance of the store, where another man brought them inside. All of the puppies survived.
