The organizers behind Sunday’s London Marathon did away with a lot of water bottles this year and instead handed out edible, biodegradable seaweed pouches containing water instead. The Ooho seaweed pouches cost less money to produce than plastic bottles. But unlike plastic bottles, the pouches, which are created from seaweed extracts, decompose in less than two months. Ooho says the company uses “the building blocks of seaweed” to make the capsules; they “remove all the green stuff and the smelly stuff.” Runners can either pop the pouches with their teeth swallow the capsule, or drink up the water and spit out the capsule.
