For the first time, Alex Trebek opens up about depression and his cancer

Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek sat down with ABC’s Good Morning America Wednesday and got real about his struggle with depression after being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in March.

“My oncologist tells me I’m doing well even though I don’t always feel it,” Trebek told Robin Roberts. “I’ve had kidney stones, ruptured disks, so I’m used to dealing with pain, but what I’m not used to dealing with is these surges that come on suddenly of deep, deep sadness, and it brings tears to my eyes.”

Trebek said: “People all over America have been sharing the good thoughts, their advice, their prayers, and I feel that it is making a difference in my well-being.”

Trebek also noted he’s had “so many contacts from people who have survived cancer, for 10 years, 12 years, 14 years,” and as a 30-day cancer survivor himself, he is determined to “catch up to those other people.”

He is set to undergo another round of chemo next week, and hopes to return to Jeopardy!, which he has hosted for 35 years, in the fall.
