Maryette McFarland recently graduated from the Open University with a degree in English Literature, seventy years after first beginning her studies. She originally attended university in Dublin in the 1960s but left before finishing to get married. After a car accident decades later, she resumed her education through online courses with support from her family, becoming the oldest of more than 300 graduates at the university’s Belfast ceremony. McFarland was joined by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as she celebrated completing her long-awaited degree.
