Dear Mark ,
Cancer has forced many people to slow down and to reassess. “Renae” was a busy working mom with three children when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. At first, the hope was that she could have the surgery and a short form of treatment and get on with things. After all, she was too busy with life to slow down for long. When the cancer became stubborn and it was obvious that this would not be a sprint but rather a marathon, the hope was that if she did everything she was supposed to that this would be behind her soon and she could get back to life. Now after all these years and all the chemotherapy, radiation and endless procedures…the cancer is still here…stage 4….and her normal life has forever changed. The hope now is to make the best of life and to make each day count for something.
……Actually, this should be all of our hope.
“Renae” is still a young woman in her 40’s and her kids are now 12, 16, and 18. Life with cancer has not stopped time. The kids have grown up with their mom having health issues and have grown even closer because of this. Renae’s sisters have been a constant presence as she has gone through this struggle and remain by her side today. As you can imagine, with kids at this age they want to be kids! Yasmin, is 12 years old and enjoys reading and girly things. Renae says she would really enjoy a “Spa Day”. Jameal is a 16 year old young man with an interest in sports and marine biology. He loves the Oregon Football team and would love a trip out off Tybee to go on a dolphin tour or would even Sea World. Shamya is an 18 year old young lady who loves to get dressed up. She would love some painting classes.
Renae wants to feel her family around her and she says just being together is being TRUE BLESSED. I pushed her if there was anything at all she would like for Christmas and she FINALLY said…well a new wig would make me feel more sparkly!
I hope we can help her family this Christmas Season too. As she has said….She is already Blessed!
