Kelly Clarkson was nominated in two categories at the 2006 Grammys: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Since U Been Gone" and Best Pop Vocal Album for Breakaway. She won both awards, a first for an American Idol winner. Kelly, 23 at the time, was on edge all night, but not because she was nervous about winning. She tells Billboard: "Well, not many people know this—not to be a Debbie Downer—but I was told that morning that I had cancerous results for something. Here's the horrible part: I went the whole day crying. They redid my makeup like four times because I was like, 'Wow, so young.' I was just completely freaking out."
Kelly has earned three No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and a trio of chart-topping albums on the Billboard 200 --and in this podcast she discusses her feelings about her current nomination (her 13th!) for the Idol Version of “Piece by Piece” (the personal lyric about having been abandoned by her father at age six only to have him want to get back in her life after her incredible success), her memories of winning her first Grammy, and watching the annual awards show as a kid. (The 59th annual Grammy Awards will take place on Feb. 12, airing live on CBS TV at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.)
Here is Kelly's very touching and emotional performance of "Piece By Piece," which she did live on American Idol in 2016. She was very pregnant at the time and admitted she was very emotional but we didn't know how emotional until we watched this incredible performance that has now earned her a Grammy nomination.
