Thinking of getting a pet? Here's the REAL cost of pet ownership

posted by Mark Robertson -

Thinking about getting a pet? The website Totally Money has launched a tool to help people understand what the lifetime cost will be. For example, did you know that the most expensive household pet to keep isn’t a dog or cat but actually a tortoise? The animals can live for more than 75 years and during that time they could set you back around $36,000.

… The average cost of keeping a large dog will be around $25,000 while the average cost of a small dog turns out to be even more at $29,000. This is because smaller dogs have a longer life expectancy.

… The average cost of keeping a guinea pig is $4,700 while a hamster is $1,350. Lizards cost an average of $5,600 over their lifetime. Goldfish are the cheapest pet to keep, setting you back just $1,180 over their average 7 year lifetime. The totals include pet insurance, food, healthcare, grooming and vaccinations among other things.
