Veteran adopts bomb-sniffing dog he worked with in Afghanistan 6 years ago

Six years ago, Joe Steenbeke was a tactical explosives dog handler in Afghanistan. That's where he met Tess. She worked by his side day after day sniffing out bombs. But he left the middle east in 2013; however Tess remained.

The dog was later moved to the Connecticut National Guard which has a program for military working dogs.

For years his wife Stephanie worked feverishly to get the two reunited.

On Saturday, Steenbeke returned home to Culver, Indiana, with Tess, the 11-year-old Belgian Malinois. Now, the two military veterans were together as they'd been in Afghanistan.

"There's a little piece of me that I didn't really ever think that I'd get back," Joe Steenbeke said. "But, it's something that my wife fought really hard for."

He says he now sleeps better with Tess in the house, and Tess is settling in nicely. Such a happy reunion!
