In the first operation of its kind in Israel, 1-year-old twins conjoined at the head were safely separated on Thursday. The twin sisters are expected to live a healthy life following the surgery. The operation took place with a medical team of over 50 people.
… The surgery lasted more than 12 hours and specialists in neurosurgery, plastic surgery, pediatric intensive care and brain imaging were flown into the country. Two experts from London and New York were the ones to separate the twins from the head.
… The process leading up to the operation was lengthy. In preparation, 3D models were used to simulate how to successfully separate the bones and blood vessels around the brain.
… The University of Minnesota reported conjoined twins only occur once every 200,000 live births.
