Watch as this grandmother outsmarts a scammer who tried to fool her

A scam recently backfired spectacularly on a 73-year-old woman from Long Island, New York. Police say the woman lured a man trying to con her out of $8,000 to her home, where officers arrested him. The whole situation took place last week, when the woman, identified only as Jean, received a call purportedly from her grandson saying he needed $8,000 to get bailed out of jail for drunk driving. The former 9-1-1 dispatcher thought that seemed fishy, as none of her grandsons are old enough to drive. Jean got other calls from the scammers and pretended to play along, and also made her own calls to police. She told the scammers she had $8,000 in cash at her home, and they came to fetch it—she handed off wrapped-up paper towels, and police tackled the man as he left her home. Police arrested 28-year-old Joshua Estrella Gomez, who has been charged with grand larceny in the third degree.
