Eighteen people were rescued Sunday (February 6th) after getting stranded on an ice floe in Lake Erie. U.S. Coast Guard. officials announced the "mass rescue," saying the chunk of floating ice near Catawba Island had broken away while the people were snowmobiling. No injuries were reported after the successful rescue, which was performed with the help of a "Good Samaritan with [an] airboat," according to the Coast Guard. That unnamed person helped seven of the stranded people to shore, while a Coast Guard helicopter and airboat took the other 11 to safety.
