Actor Matthew McConaughey has urged Americans to "take a longer and deeper look in the mirror" after the Uvalde shooting.

He has posted an emotional response to the shooting at Robb Elementary School in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday which saw 19 children and three adults killed - and called for "action".

In a lengthy statement, he wrote: "As all of you are aware, there was another mass shooting today, this time in my hometown of Uvalde, Texas.

While McConaughey’s statement did not explicitly join the reignited wave of calls for stricter gun control legislation in the U.S., the actor calls the country’s recurring news of mass shootings “an epidemic we can control.”

“Whichever side of the aisle we may stand on, we all know we can do better,” the statement continues. “Action must be taken so that no parent has to experience what the parents in Uvalde and the others before them have endured.”
