How dirty are baseballs? A Cincinnati Reds fan caught a foul ball on Monday (May 23rd)—in his beer. The catch came in the third inning of the Reds’ losing game to the Chicago Cubs. The ball was hit by Cubs player Alfonso Rivas, and it flew about three rows deep into the stands. Several fans reached up to catch the ball, which deflected off their hands and fell into the man’s cup. He then raised the cup to the crowd and chugged the beer with the ball still in it, prompting the fans to cheer. Reds broadcaster John Sadak said, “He provided the greatest additive to a beverage. Oh, the deliciousness, that is a game-used beer.” Fellow broadcaster Christ Welsh said, “A little rosin, a little dirt. Thank goodness they’ve outlawed the spitball.”
