Los Angeles voters will decide on an ordinance that would require hotels to house the homeless, after the L.A. City Council voted unanimously on Friday (August 5th) to put it on the ballot instead of having council members vote on whether to adopt the ordinance. The proposal, which will be on the March 2024 ballot, would mandate that hotels notify the city by 2 p.m. every day how many empty rooms they have for the night, and then accept payment from the city's Housing Department at a fair market rate to house homeless people in the empty rooms alongside paying guests. Both local and national hotel and tourism leaders say that if the measure passes, it could endanger the safety of hotel workers and guests
