19-year-old Madison Russo was arrested on January 23rd for allegedly scamming donors out of $37,000 by saying she had pancreatic cancer and a tumor "the size of a football."
Russo now faces up to 10 years in prison, according to the Eldridge, Iowa police.
Police say Russo faked her cancer battle on social media. Officials were tipped off when medical professionals noticed discrepancies in her posts, like incorrect placement of equipment. Russo may have also stolen photos from real cancer patients and used them as her own.
Everyone who donated to Russo's fundraiser has been reimbursed, and she has been banned from GoFundMe.
