Virgin Galactic spaceflight touches down to Earth after historic flight

A former Olympics competitor and a mother-and-daughter duo from the Caribbean became Virgin Atlantic’s first space tourists yesterday. They were passengers on the airline’s initial commercial space flight. Their rocket ship took off for a brief flight and then glided back to land in the New Mexico desert. Jon Goodwin bought his ticket 18 years ago and called the experience “by far the most awesome thing I’ve ever done in my life.” Now 80, he competed in canoeing in the 1972 Olympics. Keisha Schahaff and her daughter, Anastatia Mayers, carried mementoes from friends and family so they could share vicariously in the experience. The flights are expected to take off on a monthly schedule now.
