A Las Vegas-area realtor, Sophia Smith, has been sentenced to four months in jail and faces the potential of going to prison if she violates probation after being convicted of exploiting an older man with dementia.
According to KLAS, the court found Smith guilty of exploiting an older or vulnerable person, theft, and credit card fraud. She manipulated the victim, Cornelius "Connie" Hoffmans, who believed they were in a romantic relationship. Smith, who ran a non-profit called the Strong A.R.M. Foundation, used nearly 90% of the donations for personal expenses.
The judge sentenced Smith to a six-month jail term with a suspended 12-to-30-year prison sentence. She is also ordered to pay nearly $300,000 in restitution to the Hoffmans estate.
