School closures have been announced ahead of Tropical Storm Debby

The following local school districts have announced closures ahead of possible severe weather according to WSAV.

Appling County School District

Bryan County School District

Evans County Charter School System

First Christian Academy in Richmond Hill

Liberty County School District

Long County School District

Savannah Chatham County Public School System

Due to the expected impacts of Tropical Storm Debby on our area this week, Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will operate on a half-day schedule tomorrow, Monday, August 5th, with dismissal times as follows:

Early Dismissal Times

11:30 am –  High Schools(except Building Bridges), Mercer MS, Godley K-8/Wings ES/Building Bridges MS, Learning Academy @ Jenkins

11:40 am – Middle Schools(except Mercer) and Building Bridges HS, Wings

12:15 pm – Ellis, Garrison, IOH, Georgetown, Hesse, New Hampstead K-8, Learning Academy @ IOH, Pulaski K8, Bloomingdale

1:15 pm – Elementary Schools, Rice Creek

All SCCPSS schools will be closed on Tuesday, August 6th and Wednesday, August 7th as this storm moves through. Students will not report to school on Tuesday, August 6th or Wednesday, August 7th and there will be no required remote learning during this time.

Liberty County School District

The Liberty County School System (LCSS) announced today that it will delay the first day of school until Thursday, August 8, 2024, due to the impending threat of Tropical Storm Debby. All Liberty County School System twelve-month employees and critical workers should report to work on Monday, August 5, 2024.

Benedictine Military School

Monday, 8/5, will be a 1/2 day. BC’s campus will be closed as of 3 p.m. At this moment, we anticipate being in asynchronous learning through Wednesday, 8/7 (likely through Thursday to include a facilities review post-Debby). At this point, we plan to return in person Friday, 8/9.

First Christian Academy in Richmond Hill

Will be closed Monday, 8/5/2024 due to the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Debby. We will continue to monitor the storm and keep you informed with any future updates.

Bryan County School District

Bryan County Schools has been closely monitoring Tropical Storm Debby with its emergency services partners.

When studying the most recent weather-related data, the storm is highly likely to impact our area tomorrow. Considering the potential for historic levels of rainfall, flash flooding and possibility of tropical storm winds, Bryan County Schools has decided to close schools on Monday, August 5, 2024.

We acknowledge that weather predictions can be challenging, and the storm’s path and impact might change.

Nevertheless, we do not want to put any student, staff, or parent in danger and believe that closing the district tomorrow is in everyone’s best interest.

All sporting events and afterschool activities will also be canceled for Monday. Bryan County Schools will actively monitor this storm and make a determination about returning to school on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 by 1 p.m. on Monday.

We hope all our students, staff, parents, and the entire Bryan County community stay safe as this storm passes through our area.

Tattnall County School District

For the safety of our staff and students, Tattnall County Schools will be closed on Monday, August 5th and Tuesday August 6th.

The district will continue to monitor weather conditions and road conditions throughout the storm.

Memorial Day School and Memorial Day School Childcare Center

Closed Monday, August 5th, Tuesday, August 6th, and Wednesday, August 7th. 

Our first day of school will be Thursday, August 8th. 

Kicklighter Resource Center and Kicklighter Academy

Closed Monday, August 5 through Wednesday, August 7 due to inclement weather. We will reevaluate on Wednesday for the remainder of the week.

Georgia Southern University

The University is moving to reduced operations on Monday, Aug. 5 due to Tropical Storm Debby:

  • Monday, Aug. 5 at 12 p.m. – Armstrong Campus in Savannah and the Liberty Campus
  • Monday, Aug. 5 at 5 p.m. – Statesboro Campus

Only essential personnel should be on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah and Liberty Campus beginning at 12 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5. Only essential personnel should be on the Statesboro Campus beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5. Employees should check with their supervisor if they are unsure of their status as an essential employee. 

All campuses will remain on reduced operations on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and Wednesday, Aug. 7, with only essential personnel on campus. Employees who are able should continue with remote work during times of reduced operations. Faculty and staff should work with their supervisors. During the times of reduced operations per campus, all in-person University events are canceled. 

Savannah Technical College

Due to the expected impacts of Tropical Storm Debby, STC classes will be canceled, and campuses will close at 3 p.m. on Monday, August 5 and will remain canceled/closed on Tuesday, August 6. 

While the College will be closed for in-person activities, certain staff, who are designated by their immediate supervisor, may be required to report to work during this closure.

The College will maintain regular contact with CEMA to monitor storm impacts and will reassess impacts on Tuesday.

Ogeechee Technical College

Campuses will be open and operate normally Monday, August 5, but all campuses will be closed Tuesday, August 6.

The College will assess conditions and make an announcement regarding further closures on Tuesday afternoon. Enrollment Blitz will be rescheduled to Tuesday, August 13.
