Elwood Edwards, the iconic voice behind AOL’s “You’ve Got Mail” audio message, has passed away at the age of 74. Edwards died on Tuesday, just one day shy of his 75th birthday, after a long illness. He was a staple at WKYC-TV Studios in Cleveland, working in various roles, including graphics and camera operation. However, it was his work as the voice of AOL’s “You’ve Got Mail” message in 1989 that brought him worldwide fame. Edwards recorded just four simple lines for a payment of $200, but his voice became synonymous with the early days of the internet. He made a cameo on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in 2015, delivering his classic internet greeting onstage.
