A social media request led rescuers to nine owned pets living on chains in Effingham County late Friday afternoon.
The owned animals were being displaced due to the family's change in circumstances, but it was ultimately for the better of the animals. The dogs range in size from Jack Russell Terrier mixes to Shar Pei and Staffordshire Terrier mixes, approximately ages 1 to 3 years based. Out of the nine rescued, seven are heartworm positive, one female who is mom to two litters is in heat, all are covered in fleas, all have intestinal parasites, several have extensive skin issues, some are underweight, and all will need multiple baths to get them completely clean. None of the animals were altered, and the owner admitted none of them have ever seen a vet.
Tethering animals in Effingham County is not against the law, and there's no legal limit to how many animals may be on a property. There are state codes about providing adequate care which includes medical, and a state law requiring routine rabies vaccination. Unfortunately, the well-being of these dogs was ignored, and Coastal Pet Rescue is picking up the pieces.
Currently, two of the dogs have found foster homes, but CPR is in need of more. With this being the third mass intake case of the year, foster and shelter spaces are running low as are medical funds.
