Blackshear Police Chief Chris Wright has confirmed that a kindergarten student at Blackshear Elementary has died early Monday morning after a freak accident where she was crushed by a “monument” on Sunday night.

According to Wright, Bennett and her sister were playing on a monument at the flag pole in front of Lee Street Resource Center, when the monument fell over on her, crushing her. The accident occurred at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday evening, August 29.

She was first taken to Memorial Satilla Health in Waycross and was later taken by helicopter to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville with severe internal injuries, and died early Monday morning around 3:45 a.m. as a result of them.
