12 Noon Winter Storm Update for South Carolina

Wintry precipitation has ended in all areas of the state. Crews in the Lowcountry continue to plow snow and apply deicing materials as appropriate. Roads and bridges throughout these areas are covered in snow and ice. There are several closures due to icy conditions.

Motorists are strongly discouraged from any travel east of I-95 and I-95 (South of I-26) today as conditions are hazardous. Roads are expected to re-freeze this evening with lows of 23 creating hazardous conditions tonight and Friday morning.In addition to possible icy conditions, Motorists should also watch for slow moving SCDOT equipment applying deicing materials.

Roads and bridges throughout these areas are covered in snow and ice. There are several closures due to icy conditions. Sumter County is monitoring I-95 temps and conditions, while focusing their crews on US-521 and US-15, US-378 and 261 intersection and other reported icy spots.855-GO-SCDOT(855-467-2368)www.scdot.orgEngineering District 2 – No winter storm response activity in District 2. Crews were deployed to coastal counties to assist.Engineering District 4 – Deicing operations continue in Chesterfield County along primary and major secondary routes in the southeastern sections of the county; mainly south and east of SC 151 and US 52. Crews from Lancaster, Chester and District Operations have been mobilized to assist county crews. Temperatures are still below freezing but are expected to rise to the upper 30s during the afternoon hours.Engineering District 5 – I-95 in Darlington, Dillon and Florence is in good condition and there are no travel issues at this time. I-20 in Darlington and Florence is in passable condition and efforts are on-going to improve the condition of this road. Most primary routes and nearly all secondary routes in District 5 are covered with snow and ice. Crews continue to apply melting materials in combination with plowing to clear these roads in priority order. With temperatures not expected to rise fast today and drop into the teens tonight, we anticipate staying on 24 

In the Lowcountry, Crews are focused on maintaining the interstate and key primary routes and bridges. The majority of roads throughout the district have icy conditions and some primary and secondary routes remain covered by snow. A few road and bridge closures in District 6 remain in effect on primary and secondary roads.  I-95 in Jasper and Colleton Counties are periodically having ice issues causing delays. All spot issues are being addressed and traffic is flowing, though sometimes slow. District 6 is currently operating 24 hours with assistance from Districts 2, 3 and 4 personnel. There are currently sunny skies with above freezing temperatures in District 6.
