_ Exactly one year to the day after Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, the Federal Government shut down. But, don’t worry, you’ll still be able to get your mail. The United States Post Office has responded to questions about how the government shutdown impacts mail delivery. In short: it doesn’t. And that’s all thanks to the nature of the USPS itself.
… On Saturday, the official Twitter account for the U.S. Postal Service said “USPS operations will not be interrupted due to the Gov’t shutdown, and all Post Offices will remain open for business as usual. Because we are an independent entity that is funded through the sale of our products and services, and not by tax dollars, USPS will not be impacted.”
… Social security and medicare checks will continue to be sent out and food stamps will continue to be distributed.
THIS IS WHAT CLOSES DURING A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
_ A significant number of government employees working everywhere from parks to the EPA aren’t going to work today. During the shutdown in 2013 that totaled around 800,000 people.
… The White House will furlough 1,056 members of the Executive Office of the President, while 659 “essential” staff will continue to work.
… Most National Parks, zoos, and museums will be closed during the shutdown. Government shutdowns also typically include the Smithsonian; however, the museum tweeted over the weekend that still has funds from last year that it will use to stay open as long as possible. For now, it’s only been confirmed to stay open through today (Monday).
… The shutdown effects the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The bureau will not be providing any new gun permits during the shutdown. The shutdown also effects the passport office. If you’re waiting for one of those, don’t expect it to be processed until the shutdown is over.
