District staff spent the weekend assessing damage and evaluating repairs needed at Marshpoint Elementary following a tornado that tore off part of the school’s roof on Friday. Based on those reports and estimates of time needed for cleanup and repairs, a TENTATIVE timeline for the re-opening of Marshpoint has been formulated.
At this time, teachers are expected to be able to return to the school on Thursday following repairs to the front lobby and some clean up and repairs to classrooms that sustained minimal damage. The Open House for Marshpoint which was originally scheduled to happen this evening, is now tentatively rescheduled for Sunday, with the hope that students can begin school on Monday, August 6, 2018.
The wing where thirteen classrooms sustained more extensive damage will be walled off from the rest of the school for the safety of both students and staff while repairs are ongoing for the next 8 to 10 weeks. In addition, air quality tests will be conducted before the school is occupied to ensure there are no identified issues caused by the water damage.
If there are any changes to this tentative schedule, we will issue a notification before the end of the week. We thank our Marshpoint parents and staff for their patience and we look forward to welcoming them back to school.
The school facilities of Islands High and Coastal Middle did not sustain damage. Both schools remain on schedule to receive students on Thursday, August 2, 2018.
