The State Fair of Texas is one of the best places to find a huge variety of unique fried foods and desserts. In 2005 the State Fair launched the Big Tex Choice Awards contest, which according to the website, “solidified the State Fair of Texas as the top fair for great food creations.” The 2018 winners that were announced on Sunday. The big winners were:
• The Cotton Candy Taco (Most Creative) — A waffle cone pressed into a taco shape and filled with marshmallow glaze, chocolate, toasted marshmallow and cotton candy.
• Fernie’s Hoppin’ John Cake with Jackpot Sauce (Best Taste Savory) — A fried cake made with black-eyed peas, white rice, smoked sausage, green onions and spices.
• Arroz Con Leche (Best Taste – Sweet) – A ball of rice pudding fried and sprinkled with vanilla, then served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped with caramel sauce.
