A 50-year-old Texas man is putting Christmas trees that would otherwise be discarded to good use by making canes with them for his fellow veterans. Jamie Willis, who served in the Army for eight years, returned as a 100 percent disabled veteran unable to work and had to use a cane. After finding that the cane Veterans Affairs provided was ugly and unstable, he discovered Florida-based Free Canes for Veterans, which gives stylish, handmade canes to veterans. He reached out to the organization, asking if he could learn how to make his own cane, and after making the first one, opened a branch in Texas in 2016. Since then, he has made and donated more than 200 custom canes for veterans. With Christmas now over, he's for a second year asked people to donate their Christmas trees for him to use. Home Depot has donated 400 trees and community members gave another 100.
