Is there a new "Dirty Dancing" movie on the horizon?

Premiere Of DreamWorks Pictures' "Real Steel" - Arrivals

There is a new, as of yet untitled dance film in the early stages at Lionsgate Films.

It is set in the 90s and Jennifer Grey is part of it. Grey of course played Baby in the original "Dirty Dancing" alongside the late Patrick Swayze. But this time she is listed as the star of the film and she's also the executive producer. It's also interesting to note that Lionsgate holds the rights to all the Dirty Dancing films.

You remember Dirty Dancing. Grey played Baby, the teenager who falls for her Catskills dance teacher Johnny Castle (Swayze) which came out in 1987 and earned $218 million at the box office yet cost only $5 million to make. The film earned an Oscar and Golden Globe for the original song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” sung by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. At the Globes, Dirty Dancing was nominated in the comedy/musical category with nods for Swayze as comedy/musical actor and Grey as actress. Dirty Dancing was also the first movie to sell over 1 million copies on home video and yielded two multi-platinum soundtrack albums.

But no one is saying if this new movie is a remake of the original and what role Grey would play. Tongues are wagging!
