GIANT TORTOISE THOUGHT TO BE EXTINCT FOUND IN GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Genetic tests have confirmed that a giant tortoise found in the Galapagos Islands is from a species scientists thought had become extinct more than a century ago. The single female tortoise was discovered during a 2019 expedition to Fernandina Island. The remains of a male specimen from 115 years ago allowed Yale University geneticists to determine that the female is indeed a Chelonoidis phantasticus, also known as Fernandina giant tortoise
