Veteran Saves Lawncare Worker From Canal

On Friday afternoon Navy veteran Michal Smith rescued a lawn worker that fell in to a canal while wearing a heavy backpack leaf blower. Smith heard screams, dove in, and swam the man to safety with help from neighbors, then cared for the man until firefighters arrived and took him to the hospital, where he was later released from intensive care. This was the second rescue in the same canal in a year, after a neighbor saved another worker in 2024. Officials cautioned that while the city’s canals are scenic, they can quickly become dangerous.
