Community Loaves, a Seattle nonprofit led by Katherine Kehrli, has mobilized nearly 900 volunteer bakers across Washington, Oregon, California and Idaho to combat growing food insecurity. Since 2020, the network has delivered more than 200,000 fresh loaves and 220,000 energy cookies to food pantries. “Most of our food banks do not get any kind of whole-grain sandwich bread donation,” Kehrli said. “When we ask what we could do better, they just say, ‘Bring us more.'” Volunteer Cheryl Ewaldsen has baked nearly 800 loaves in two years. “I just get really excited about it knowing that it’s going to someone and they’re going to make, like, 10 sandwiches,” she said
